The Red Hook Criterium is the world’s premier track bike crit featuring professional road racers, track specialists, bike messengers and urban cyclists competing over multiple laps around a fast technical circuit. Fixed gear track bicycles are mandatory, requiring riders to possess street-tuned handling skills and high levels of fitness.
The first ever race was held in 2008 and organized to celebrate David Trimble’s 26th birthday with no sponsors, prizes, promotion or permits. Despite only a few dozen cyclists and a handful of spectators the race atmosphere was intense and well received. The race was won by Kacey Manderfield who won a tight sprint against her male rivals. She would go on to win a national track championship and turn professional that same year.
It gained in massively in popularity every year and is now the highlight of the crit racing scene. The racing is relentless and hugely demanding for the riders. If you’re in London you won’t want to miss this one!
