In a world with ever marginal marginal gains, Muc-Off have now released ‘the worlds fastest chain’ that was used in Sir Bradley Wiggins’s Hour Record.
The chains go through a unique cleaning and grading process before a military grade special formula gets applied. This ‘speed film’ contains NanoTube addictive which results in a huge reduction in friction, saving up to 6 watts.
“Each chain is painstakingly speed graded and run-in under load during which data is taken to find its optimum. Now it’s sonic cleaned in several formulas and hand treated with the Nanotube formula, then nanotube particles are applied. The original chain cost £6000, but Muc-Off have now developed the technique and able to offer them for a lot less, but still a lot more than what you’d typically pay for a chain.

Muc-Off will be selling a ‘top up’ Nanotube Speed Film Lube for £35 which will allow owners to reapply the coating once it wears off, bringing you back within 1-2 watts from new. “It won’t be as fast as when it was first treated as we use a special technique and processes to ensure the formula is driven deep into each link for 100% coverage (we also apply a powder externally) but you can still achieve significant savings. Don’t worry it will still be one of the fastest chains on the planet!”

It’s an awful lot for a chain, but this kind of performance and attention to detail is squarely aimed at those in high level competition. That said, we reckon you could achieve similar results using a standard chain with their speed film lube.
